Are you preparing to get a beautiful new fence installed at your home? Whether it’s a charming and classic white picket fence or an elegant wrought iron fence, chances are you need a fence permit. Do you need a fence permit (and why do you need one in the first place)?
Check the Codes
Every community is different, so check the codes, zoning, and regulations where you live to see what the laws are. Your city, town, and county might all have different requirements so it pays to read the fine print when it comes to your fence permit. Some places require fence permits for only certain types of fences, others only require permits for new fences and not fence repairs or replacements. If you live in an area with lots of shared fences, you also might need to get your neighbor to sign off on the fence permit saying that you have their permission to do the installation.
Can I File a Permit?
This also depends on the area that you live in and what the rules are. Some local agencies want you to provide a computer-aided drawing or CAD of the fence with measurements and appropriate information as part of the permit. Other offices don’t care. If you work with Hercules Fence, we can do the drawings for the fence permit and include the filing of the fence permit itself in our estimate to you.
How Long Do I Wait?
Once you file the fence permit, it is typically a day to a week before you hear back about whether or not it is approved depending on how many people are involved in the decision process and how strict your local government is. If your fence permit is not approved, you may need to adjust the information you provided or change materials and reapply. If you try to skip getting a fence permit, construction could need to be halted midway and you could get hit with steep fines.
