Fences for Windy Areas

fence design

If you live in a windy area and are worried about how it will affect your fence, chain link is your best choice.

When choosing the perfect fence to accent your home, complement your landscaping, and protect your house, it’s important to take into account the weather conditions where your home is located. If you live in a windy area or a place prone to hurricanes and severe weather events passing through, your fence design should allow air to flow through spaces in the fence while still providing some privacy. Here are some beautiful fence designs that are optimal for windy areas.

The Classic: Picket Fence

Everyone knows the classic suburban image of a white picket fence. It’s the iconic fence choice of many Americans, and its beauty goes beyond the exterior. Picket fences are composed of vertical slats of wood spaced along the length of your fence. If privacy isn’t the primary reason you are building a fence, you can space the pickets up to several inches apart so that wind can easily pass through the fence without causing damage. If you do want your fence design tooffer a degree of privacy, pickets can be blended together in close proximity to each other to reduce visibility. This fence design is not as optimal for windy areas, as the wind has a much smaller amount of space to flow through.

The Versatile: Vinyl Fences

Vinyl fences are a great option for homeowners seeking the look of a wooden fence or privacy fence without the cost or fence design restrictions associated with them. Vinyl fences can be made to look just like wooden picket fences or privacy fences, but be sure to choose a design that allows wind to properly flow through. Vinyl fences can be additionally protected through internal reinforcements added to the posts themselves. These help the fence to bear higher wind loads than similar fences that don’t have extra reinforcement.

The Best for Wind: Chain Link Fences

While chain link is not necessarily the most popular choice for residential properties, it is the ideal fence design for those concerned about wind damaging their fence.Chain link fences have open links that allow wind to blow right through without uprooting any sections. The major downside of chain link is that is offers almost no privacy. You can consider adding privacy slats that are made of vinyl or other materials, but just like removing the spacing between slats in a picket fence, it will greatly cut down on how much wind can flow through. To increase privacy by adding slats without removing the ability to withstand high winds, consider adding more posts between additional posts in your fence to help it stand strong and not blow away.
